What a fabulous trip! Your website conveys the adventure so beautifully :-) We have also spent a bit of time beyond the borders of ZA in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia. I think once you have Africa in your heart, it stays there. Its a tough/hard continent but its filled with amazing mystery and depth :-)

Hi guys, Just a quick thank you email, we are doing the same (ish) trip as you, we are travelling from London to Cape town by the west coast and back to London via the east coast. Your GPS coordinates have been invaluable to us at times, we are currently in the Terminus hotel in Lobito and even managed to bag a shower, I did have a laugh to myself when I saw the bidet in the toilet!
Hope life is treating you well in South Africa, Namibia is touching distance away and we are so looking forward to a huge steak and glass of wine (bliss!!!)
Our blog, which is very behind schedule, is above, you can have a look and reminisce about your adventure.
Best wishes,
Gill & Danny

Hi there, Just found your card again. So you did it almost as you expected your journey to be from what I can see from your track in Google Earth. Congratulations. Maybe now you consider doing it the other way round. No I'am kidding. Not have had time enough to read your adventure thoroughly but the little I've read makes my mouth water. Oh yes I forgot to say who is writing. I'm one of the couple of Bretons who travelled along with you across Mauritania up to Saint-Louis. Cheers. Marc & Annie

Hello you two! Thank you for your great website - one of the best we know. Just the thing for a dreary Sunday afternoon in Germany. Great reports, great photos and plenty of useful information for other travelers. Remember us? We are the two Germans with the beige LandCruiser. We met in Ouagadougou. We are back home for 4 months now and try to settle down again.
Much love and a good time
wish Kim and Tanja

Hello Neil & Cathrine It was wonderful reading about your trip, especially through Botswana and brought back so many memories. Keith & I lived there for 6+ years and loved every minutes of it. When you described your trip in a Mokoro I was reliving the trip to the Delta we did in 1976. What amazing tales you will be able to recount to your children and grandchildren! Your Mum & Dad kept us up to date in Cape Town but it was great to read your experiences first hand. God bless you both, Colette

Hi Neil and Catherine. We are so envious of your sightings of lions and elephants at Okaukeujo especially the watering hole. We were there in January and spent many hours at the watering hole and driving through the game reserve and didnt see one single lion or elephant! Just wild dogs bugging us right outside our chalet while braaing! We were told that the rainy season is not the time to see much so we have only ourselves to blame, was lovely and green and lush though! Enjoy the rest of your trip. Have so enjoyed reading of your adventures. Regards Nigel and Debbie

Hi! We are planning a similar trip, at least as far as namibia, almost exactly a year behind you, and have been fascinated by your very well documented diary. It has been a wonderful source of information for our trip research project - thank you so much! Especially impressed by the detail of GPS positions for each day's stop and campsite info.
We also have a Defender 110, 300 Tdi; Jenny is SA and I (John) am a Brit.
Just one point of detail - where did you obtain your visas for Congo, DRC and Angola?
Emjoy Namibia, it is a fabulous country! Best wishes John & Jenny

Neil and Katherine in our veiw the story of you crossing Angola was by far the best both in terms of story and photos your Land Rover is doing stirling service. Had some Portuguese come to visit the cave in mud splattered 4X4's they were returning from Morocco and I gave them your web site. We look foreward to your next update and please stay safe.

Hi guys, thought of you today as we had our international weekend at city hope. People were invited to come up to the micro-phone and tell a story or sing a song from there home land. Of course we had many African nations represented and so we got the tiniest tiniest peek at what you guys must be experiencing daily. Brilliant!
We found the latest post about Nigeria really inspiring. God is with you always.
Bit of personal news (Just in case you forgot how normal people in London live their lives!), i got volentary redundency. This is brilliant for me because- 1. I have got 7 months worth of wages as a pay off 2. I have been given a months gardening leave so im taking Pook and Sam Sam on a mini holiday to Grimsby, Newcastle, Edingburgh and canal boating. 3. I have a new job to go to next to Trafalgar Square which im really excited about.
Bit worried about Neils physique so i had a full English at H's Cafe this morning; Bacon, 3 sausages, hash brown, fried bread, toast, mushrooms, poached eggs, beans and bubble. I think it is sympathy eatiing!
Pook is going to try and ring you in the next day or two, Catherines mum has been keeping us up to speed with things, but it will be even better hearing it from you guys
God bless Tom

Neil and Kath just to let you know your not alone with your marathon trek as I met a couple at St Michaels Cave where I still work who were enroute to Argentina on a BMW motor bike !!!! They were heading to moroco and then shipping the bike to New York and then heading south. The weather here on the rock has been ghastly with endless rain for about 10 weeks infact the total rain fall for the last two weeks of Dec and the whole of Jan came to around 1.3 meters, you realy did time your visit to Gib well !! Keep safe and we look foreward to your next update.

we arrived quite well on 30th of January in Germany and since Wednesday we are back in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Really it was a great time we spent together, and there is no doubt, we ll keep this special moments in memories. Now back in Brazil we ll keep you company watching the news on your website. So, we all wish you the very best on your trip to South Africa, and don’t forget our agreement, sharing our fine Defenders, so you both have to visit us in Brazil and we ll do the same going one day to South Africa. Good trip and if there anything wrong with the good old Defender, just give me a call.

We are continuing to enjoy your exploits from the comfort of the sofa. We loved the convoy tales and agree that the French who live to eat not eat to live down tools at 12 noon sharp as we learnt from living in France, actually in the same department as the guys in the 2CV's, the Dordogne. We look forward to the next instalment. Stay safe.

What an incredible epic and adventure you guys are enjoying! The courage to give up so much of the known and comfortable in exchange for so much unknown and discovery is so admirable and inspiring!
We've so been enjoying following your progress, and although a patch on experiencing first hand, its been wonderful to share the experience with you - reading your diary and enjoying the photos. Thank you for sharing the adventure with us!

We are going to do almost the same trip as yours. We will live on 2 oct via Sète (ferry ) and Tanger. Perhaps we will meet somewhere in Africa... Our car is an old Toyota Land Cruiser BJ 40 built in 1980, yellow with african animals painted on its doors. I have read many times it is possible to get an Angola 5 days transit visa in Abuja (Nigeria). Many times, RDCongo authorities dont allow travellers to enter if they dont have the Angola visa...Good luck and have a great trip! Sorry for my English which is not very fluent.

Hi Neil and Catherine, What a fantastic trip you have ahead of you. Love your Web Site. My mind is flooded with memories. We could have used your planning we took the Austin A55 to Kilimanjaro in 1962. The book that inspired me back then was Richard Pape's "Cape Cold to Cape Hot" Did you ever read it? You guys are so well prepared. I think an MGB would have been more appropriate though, he, he! Once you have finished the African bush, then head over here and do some desert stuff. Lots of love to you both, and God speed. Rob Cole

It was great to see you again today, Catherine. Have a WONDERFUL, EXCITING trip. I am SO O O O jealous! I would love to do this again ... but you go all the way down to the bottom of Africa!
I will be following you and pray that you have a great, safe trip.
Don't forget to let the knitting group know how you are getting on and what you manage to knit (even with some piccies)!
Sue (and Mike)

Hi mate, this website has clearly been Neil-ed - don't think I've ever seen anything so thorough as this. Interesting comment from Catherine's family in Switzerland - it sounds as if they live near us, at the east end of Lake Geneva. Looking forward to seeing you guys, God Bless, Al & Kate

Interesting looking route through TZ :) Will it come via Dodoma? Very welcome if so - we even have a vehicle workshop to put the remains of your car back together when you get here! You do realise there aren't actually any roads in Tanzania :)

Wow, only just got the link to your site, excellent stuff.
I do have two requests: - Could your route through Switzerland pass a tad more to the East - the other end of the lake, for example? :) - Any chance of getting and RSS feed for the diary? Or maybe a Twitter account which alerts for new updates to the diary?
Love from Swiss family Simkins....
